During the press conference Dr. Rahul Kohli, Dr. Bakshish Singh and Dr.Vikas Kumar shared their experience of looking after the patients who have undergone a kidney transplant at SPS Apollo Hospitals. Over the past year many patients have undergone a successful kidney transplant with success rates comparable to the best in the world.

End stage renal disease is a potentially fatal condition in which there is a progressive loss in renal function over a period of months or years. According to Dr. Bakshish Singh, in such situations the kidneys are no longer able to work at a level needed for day-to-day life. Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and kidney stones can cause this state. Although three forms of therapy - haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplant are available for this condition, kidney transplant is the best form of therapy. Moreover it is also the cheapest amongst all in the long run, added Dr. Bakshish Singh.
According to Dr. Vikas Kumar, with improving surgical techniques this operation ensures safety of both the donor and recipient of kidney transplant with excellent short and long term outcomes. He further added that kidney donation is absolutely safe and there is no effect on the life expectancy of kidney donors. After undergoing transplant, a patient will be free from disease and can expect to lead a normal life.
The statistics portray an alarming need for organ transplantation in India. At present, of the 1.5 lakh new patients who suffer from end-stage renal failure e annually, only 3,500 get kidney transplants and 6,000 undergo dialysis, informed Dr. Rahul Kohli, Dr. Baskhish Singh and Dr.Vikas Kumar.
