Ludhiana, April 23, 2013: The Punjab Government today issued a notification declaring Jain Community as Minority Community under section 2 of the Punjab State Commission for Minority Act 2012, fulfilling the long pending demand of this community.
Announcing this in the Mahavir Jayanti function organised by Bhagwan Mahavir Sewa Sansthan today Bikram Singh Majithia, Revenue and Public Relations Minister, Punjab today said that this historic initiative has been taken by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who consistently pursued this issue with all departments to fulfill the 65 years old demand of Jain Community.
Majithia said that Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was to personally come to this function to give this gift to Jain Community has personally given me this notification to give this historic news to the Jain Community. He said that it was SAD-BJP Government that always look after the interests of minorities including Jains.
He regretted that the Congress Government during its term 2002 to 2007, even cancelled the public holiday on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, crushing the sentiments of peace loving community.
Majithia said that Parkash Singh Badal immediately after assuming power in 2007, in a very first decision on March 31st 2007 restored the Public Holiday for Mahavir Jayanti. He said that SAD-BJP Government believes in the policy of “Sarbat Da Bhala” and takes all religions, communities along with it in making Punjab most prosperous state of the country.
Paying reverence to Lord Mahavir on the sacred occasion of ' Mahavir Jayanti', Majithia called upon the people to follow the philosophy and teachings of the Lord Mahavir, who advocated the principles of simple living and high thinking to achieve the ultimate goal of salvation. He said that Lord Mahavir attracted people from all walks of life, kings and commoners, men and women, princess and priest, rich and poor. He preached the message of non- violence, truth, non stealing, celibacy and non possession full of universal compassion. He said that he had a special reverence for the Jainism, because it was the religion that condemned violence of any kind and he was also a firm believer that violence against a human being was nothing but against the all mighty, who created the mankind.
