
Jalandhar, April 2, 2013: In the recently-held accident on the Jalandhar-Nakodar highway, where thirteen children were killed and nine got injured due to head-on collision of the speeding truck with their school van, one of the injured survivors-Chanpreet Singh (5), was rushed to a hospital in Jalandhar, where the doctors detected that there is no blood supply in the left leg of the patient. Afterwards, the patient was taken to Dayanand Medical College & Hospital for further treatment. Advanced investigations in the form of CT Scan Angiography showed that the blood supply was totally cut-off at the level of mid-thigh and the thigh bone was also badly damaged. The immediate surgery was done by a team of doctors led by Dr Sanjeev Uppal (Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery) alongwith Dr Harpal Singh, Dr PL Gautam, Dr Puneet Aulakh Pooni, Dr Deepak Bhat and Dr Shireen Shah.
During the surgery, the 7.5 cms defect of the artery, which carries blood to the leg, was reconstructed using a vein graft and the blood supply to the leg was restored after 15 hours of injury. The bone was fixed through external fixation.
Dr Sanjeev Uppal informed that the patient has progressed well after undergoing treatment for such severe trauma injury and will be discharged today. Secretary of DMCH Managing Society, Prem Kumar Gupta congratulated the team of doctors for performing such complex surgery successfully. Principal Dr Daljit Singh said that DMCH is one of the leading hospitals of the region which is well-equipped to perform peripheral vascular injuries a limb trauma. Around 400 such surgeries have been performed within a period of three years, where blood supply to the affected limb was restored.
