Ferozepur/Guruharsahai, June 15, 2013: First rain of the pre-monsoon, in Ferozepur and surrounding areas, has given a relief to the people from the scorching heat but at the same time, it has exposed the poor development works in the state with the choking of sewerage systems.
The day today mobility of the people was disrupted due to standing of water on the roads, streets and bazaars.
The local resident of Guruharsahai and Ferozepur while speaking to the media said the status and quality of development being claimed by the Punjab Government by spending crores of the rupees, could be seen from the pitiable condition with the blockage of sewerage. The early morning rain in this part has also affected the recently planted paddy saplings with the blockage of water in the fields. While the agriculture department is claiming the rain to be beneficial for the crop, the farmers’ community is not happy as the following of PR 114, 116, 118 variety of paddy would be delayed.
According to another source, the collapsing of house of Kuldip Singh son of Chuhar Singh of village Ahmad Dhandi, due to heavy rains has also been reported. The overflow of rain water is due to non-cleaning of canals at the appropriate time and levelling of berms by the farmers with their fields. The Drainage Department is likely to take action against the defaulting farmers for illegal occupation of berms.
