SEMINAR on Open Source Softwares for Education

Oustanding students being honourd at a seminar on “Open Source Software” organised by Shivesh Computers at Ludhiana.

Ludhiana, May 1, 2013: A seminar on “Open Source Software” was organised by Shivesh Computers to guide students to explore the advantages of Open Source.
The resource person Ravinder Singh, Assistant Professor ( Computer Department) GNIMT, Model Town , Ludhiana , said that “Open Source Software” is a freely available software , for which the user need not to pay any cost and the source code of the software is also available for expert users for modification and redistribution without any restriction. He also told that Open Source is an innovative idea which was started by Richard Stallman , the founder of Open Source Movement.
Free software is collaborative model where programmers, testers, document writers over the world get together over the internet and render their expertise for a particular project. The code of every open source project is made public for further improvements. A live example of successful open source project is LINUX operating system.
The seminar highlighted the use of Open Source in the field of education.

Singh emphasised that schools and college can use open source instead of proprietary software to cut down the cost of education. There are many open source softwares available for schools at schoolforge.net. He also told that open source softwares consumes less hardware resources and can be run easily of old computers, thus further cutting the cost of purchasing new hardware.
The only drawback of Open Source is that support is only available on internet, but still many Linux Users Groups are available for help.
He also gave the example of Kerala Government where government has introduced Open source in all its schools.
About 45 students were present in the seminar students said that it was the new topic them and the appreciate the efforts of the computer institute to introduce about the new topic.
Sohan Kumar Shastri of Shivesh Computers thanked the resource person and asked the students to take advantage of Open Source.
Later on various students were given prized for their extra ordinary talent in Art , culture and Academics.
