Ludhiana, April 10, 2013: Gurdeep Singh (name changed), 60-years old farmer residing in Gujrawala, Ludhiana suffered a massive heart attack. He was treated initially at a local heart hospital in a city, where he didn’t show any sign of recovery and was finally referred to HDHI under the treatment of Chief Cardiologist-Dr G S Wander

According to Dr Wander, patient Gurdeep Singh was diagnosed to have severely leaking heart valve (mitral valve) wth complaints of severe chest pain, sweating and dyspnea. If the heart valve leak is severe, it impairs the forward flow of blood and cause symptoms of congestive heart failure, which include: shortness of breath, especially with exertion or when lying flat, leg swelling or fluid retention elsewhere in the body, informed - Dr Wander.

For surgical intervention of damaged heart valve, case was further taken up by Dr Sarju Ralhan (Sr. Cardio vascular and thoracic surgeon), who decided to undertake bypass surgery. On examining the patient, Dr Sarju Ralhan realised that an extreme care need to be taken care of heart valve while performing bypass surgery.

According to Dr. V. K Sharma  (H.O.D and Senior Consultant, Cardiac Surgery) and Dr Sarju Ralhan, there are two options in treating leaking heart valve, i.e. either to change the valve or repair it. For a person who has suffered major heart attack, repairing a valve is quite a difficult task as compared to the replacing of valve, which no doubt, is much easier but the procedure has some inherent risks also. It was also realized that there could be a rapid deterioration if timely surgery was not done.

Under the expert supervision of Anaesthetic team anesthesia was given. An artificial heart support machine was inserted. Team of Doctors made a detailed plan to repair the valve using a special imported ring along with triple bypass. The plan worked successfully – the bypass restored the blood flow and valve leakage stopped due to the perfect application of ring by team of doctors.

Dr.G.S Wander chief cardiologist and coordinator HDHI- emphasised that there are thousands of complex surgeries are being done successfully in HDHI. The team of Doctors- Dr. V. K Sharma, Dr. Sarju Ralhan, Dr. Rajeev Gupta, Dr. Vikram Pal Singh, Dr. Manish, Dr. Gurmeet, Dr. Sameer (Cardio thoracic surgeons at HDHI)  and Dr. Dinesh Garg, Dr. Rajesh Arya, Dr. Vivek Gupta, Dr. Arun (Anaesthetic team at HDHI) has performed successfully around 150 Double heart surgeries of this kind in HDHI.  All this is possible due to excellent facilities in hospital and highly trained doctors and staff which makes Hero DMC heart the best heart institute in north India as a result of which many patient from far-away places from India and abroad visit HDHI for best heart treatment.
