
The Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Shivraj V. Patil flagging off Mobile Mammography Breast Cancer Van of Govt. Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh at Punjab Raj Bhavan, Chandigarh on Friday.
Chandigarh, April 12, 2013: Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Shivraj V. Patil today flagged off Mobile Mammography Breast Cancer Unit of Government Medical College and Hospital, Chandigarh from Punjab Raj Bhawan.
Patil said this initiative would delivers potentially life-saving technology to communities that would otherwise have little to no access to advanced breast-cancer screening. He said the program's goals are to make screening more convenient, increase outreach to underserved communities and reduce the disparities in care due to access. He said early detection for breast cancer is extremely important because today more women are diagnosed in late stages when the cancer has already spread.
Patil said that breast cancer patients has best outcome in terms of life span, in case it could be detected early and treated early, like in the western countries. It requires the awareness to the population of Union Territory of Chandigarh including its own villages and slums where everyday hundred of new migrants are setting further increasing the ratio of breast cancer patients. He said that this would be proved a giant step which would both population friendly as well as patient friendly at their doors steps.
Dr. Raj Bahadur, Director GMCH, Chandigarh, said that this Mobile Van has in built facilities for Mammography, taking sample for FNAC and Automatic Processor for development of the mammography films, along a dedicated team of medical persons as well as motivated women possibly, group of breast cancer patients in the form of organisations get together and organise camps in each sector of Chandigarh, villages and slums which shall certainly make an impact of awareness as well as helping early detection of breast patient suspected patient following this protocol will be brought to GMCH, Chandigarh and can be treated effectively by surgery chemotherapy and radiotherapy which is existing in GMCH, Chandigarh.
