28-hr-long protest dharna ends after Mayor’s intervention

Ludhiana, April 11, 2013: The ongoing protest outside Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC) office here ended on Thursday after Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwarhia gave an assurance that a resolution for giving a job to a family member of the former deceased LMC driver Darshan Lal would be brought in the general house of the Corporation and sent to the state government for approval.

Mayor categorically told that they were unable to provide a job to the deceased’s family member in the near future.

Protestors were staging protest for the last over 28 hours after keeping body of Darshan Lal there. The protest was declared ended the body was lifted from the spot after the Mayor’s assurance. Later, the body was cremated by the aggrieved family members. Protestors under the leaders of the Dalit leaders including Hans Raj Gagat were strongly pleading for giving a job to a family member of Darshan Lal.

The deceased Darshan Lal had been working on collector’s rates as a driver in LMC since 1994. In the year 2011, when Darshan Lal had been driving a LMC truck, a road accident occurred following which he was terminated from job.

Meanwhile, Gagat has warned that they would be constrained to launch a massive agitation in the future, if assurance given by the Mayor was not implemented.

Darshan Lal had breathed his last on Tuesday.
