Ferozepur, March 29, 2013: The present government in Punjab makes tall claims of providing clean drinking water to the people of the state but despite all arrangements, certain villages are still compelled to drink the contaminated water.

Life on our planet thoroughly depends on water. The condition of our health is largely dependent on the quality of the water we drink. No doubt, the people are increasingly concerned about the safety of their drinking water to avoid acute health effects like nausea, lung irritation, skin rash, vomiting, dizziness, and even death.  Water pollution occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.

As per the sources, the plight of the residents of village Kalle Wala, near Mohan Ke Uttar in Guruharsahai Block, in Ferozepur District of Punjab, could be well imagined from the statement of  Joginder Singh resident of the village that neither the residents have any hand pumps in their houses nor any government hand pumps are available in the village and they have to go, to far-away places, in search of clean drinking water from submersible pumps installed in the fields. When these submersible pumps are not put on by the farmers, the villagers have no other alternative except to go in for contaminated water with the result besides facing number of water borne diseases.

He also informed that the Congress government during their tenure had installed the water works and promise was made to install water pipe lines also up to the residents of 250 houses but even after passing of eight year’s time, the water works supply has not been provided to the slum residents.

Joginder Singh further said that the teeth of most of the children of the area are turning yellowish and suffering from serious water-borne diseases like asthma.

The residents of the village have demanded from the Punjab Government to install the R.O. System in the village so that the people of the area could get the clean drinking water besides saved from water-borne diseases.

It is the case of one village in Punjab, there are hundreds of such villages which do not have provision for safe and clear drinking water and suffering from water-borne diseases even after 66 years independence of India.
