Ludhiana, November 22, 2014: The team of doctors at SPS Apollo Hospitals Ludhiana gave a new lease of life to a five year old boy who sustained a complete amputation of his left arm from a fodder cutting machine (toka machine).
Dr Ashish Gupta, Consultant & Head, Department of Plastic & Microvascular Surgery said,“ The child and his amputated limb were brought within 2 hours of the injury and the blood circulation could be successfully restored well within 6 hours of the injury time resulting in good and smooth post operative recovery. The nerves and muscles were also repaired but would take months for their function to return. Even though the arm had been avulsed (pulled off) from the body by the machine yet the orthopedician and the plastic surgery team could perform the bony union and the anastomosis of the blood vessels and nerves.”
Dr. Harmandeep Singh, Consultant Department of Orthopaedics & Trauma, (who performed the bony union) said that awareness amongst the patients and the availability of expertise at the referral centre makes the difference between leading a normal functional life and being a cripple at the age of 5. We are exalted that the child could recover from this extreme injury and go back home in a span of 10 days.
Dr Kapil Chib, Medical Superintendent informed that the team comprising of Dr. Samta (Emergency), Dr Ashish Gupta (Consultant & Head Plastic & Microvascular Surgery), Dr Harmandeep Singh (Consultant Orthopedics) and Dr Vikas (Pediatric Intensive Care) were instrumental in successfully re-implanting the limb back with the child’s body.
