Chandigarh, June 4, 2014: The Punjab Government today decided to review the collector rates of land in the state. The decision, aimed at giving a major boost to investment in new development projects in the
state, follows a meeting of the Deputy Chief Minster Sukhbir Singh Badal with officials of the local government this morning.
In another major decision, the government also decided to review the details of the property tax structure in the state.  The Government is of the view that property tax needs to be both” simplified and rationalised” to make it realistic and easy on the taxpaying public.
Moving quickly on the feedback received from various quarters, including political, official, trade and farming quarters, the Deputy Chief Minister today directed the concerned departments that both
Collector Rates and property tax be rationalised through “ a people-friendly and investment driven’ policy. The taxation structure, he said, must be brought in tune with ground realities, with an eye on promoting the government’s objective of making the state the most attractive investment destination in the country.”
The Deputy Chief Minister has been engaged in marathon feedback sessions over the issues concerning the people especially with regard to government policies and their implementation at the cutting edge. He has been interacting with elected representatives of the people at various levels as also with voluntary social and commercial organisations, including those from the world of business, trade and
industry and agriculture, in addition to receiving feedback from average households. Over the past few day, Sukhbir Singh Badal has also be interacting with political rank and file from across the
political spectrum as also with experts on economy.
Sukhbir Singh Badal has directed the Financial Commissioner (Revenue) to direct the Deputy Commissioners in all districts to involve elected representatives of the people and eminent social
workers and organisations for a comprehensive feedback on the need and nature of changes in both the collector rate structures and property tax. Te officers have been asked to prepare a detailed outline of the
proposed amendments in both the directions keeping in view of practical rationale and the sentiments of the people. He has sought suggestions to balance the pragmatic fiscal targets of the government
with the feasibility and practicable views and wishes of the people at large.
