Chappar Chiri (SAS Nagar), February 18, 2014: On the third day ‘Progressive Punjab Agriculture Summit-2014’, experts from across the country suggested the farmers of the state to domesticate local breed of milching cows for commercial dairy farming.
In the Seminar ‘Commercial Dairy Farming; Development and Possibilities’ held under the chairmanship of Dr. K.L.M. Pathak, Deputy Director General of National Agriculture Research Council (NARC), Dr. Kusmakar Sharma, ADG, HRD, NARC said that the milk productivity is directly proportional to the standard of fodder being supplied to the cattle. He said that the 70 to 80 per cent price of the product being made from the milk depend upon on the quality of fodder. He further said that farmers should minutely look after the fodder for nearly four month after the insemination of the milch cattle.
On the Subject of quality product, Dr. A.S. Nanda, Former Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Govt. of India spoke on the issue of breed improvement, insemination, cross breeding etc. He specifically asked the farmers to promote the local breed. He said that due to the global climate change and increase of temperature, it is hard to rare to foreign breed of milch cattle so if the authorities promote local Sahiwal, Neeli Ravi and Muraah breeds in proper and scientific manner then these local breeds can definitely match the quality and productivity of the foreign breeds in next 20-25 years. He informed that foreign breeds especially American and Canadian graze much fodder due to their built whereas cattle from India and New Zealand graze comparatively less fodder as they are dwarf. Dr. Nanda further stressed on the need of setting up semen plants in India because the exports of semen is much costlier. He said that silage system is the key to promote the quality and quantity of the fodders.
Veterinary expert from Netherland Dr. Josefin Varige, Dr. G.R. Patil, Joint Director (Academic), National Dairy Research Organisation, Karnal, and Progressive farmers Mr. Daljit Singh and Sukh Harpreet Singh Rode also spoke on the variety of issues related to the health and hygiene of milch cattle besides producing high quality fodder.//punjab news live, punjab news online, punjab news, punjab news headlines, punjab breaking news, india news, punjab news, world news,
