Golden Jubilee gift for poor patients: Operation Walk III 2014 begins at DMCH

The mega charity event ‘Operation Walk III 2014’ begins on Saturday as a part of golden jubilee year activities of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana.

Ludhiana, January 18, 2014: The mega charity event ‘Operation Walk III 2014’ began today as a part of golden jubilee year activities of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. Under this project, hip and knee replacements would be done for poor needy patients totally free of cost. The patients have been selected from all over North India after extensive recruitment camps. This follows the success of two previous editions of this project ‘Operation Walk 2011 and 2012’ in which 129 free joint replacements were carried out with excellent results. This special charitable activity would be carried out by the faculty of department of Orthopaedics in association with a team from Operation Walk Maryland, USA led by Dr. Paul Khanuja. Operation Walk Maryland is a non-profit, volunteer medical service organization providing free surgical treatment for patients in developing countries.

Today, the team examined the patients which were shortlisted for screening. More than eighty joint replacements would be carried out in the coming week in joint association of faculty, Department of Orthopaedics and the visiting team from USA.

Prem K Gupta, Secretary Managing Society, DMCH said that the patients would get all the hospital services, latest imported implants, medicines and food totally free of cost under this project. The post operative treatment of patients in OPD and X-rays would also be free. He said that DMCH would continue to lead the way in charitable activities and this year we are aiming to increase the number of cases to be operated on. He said that the team consisting of about fifty people including surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nursing staff, surgical technologists, physiotherapists and other supporting staff has reached DMCH. Equipment, implants and consumables to be used during this project have also been procured from USA.

Dr. M Yamin, Professor and Head and Dr. Deepak Jain, Associate Professor, Orthopaedics, who is the Coordinator of the project, said that the patients would be operated with the state of the art technology from USA and free walkers and post operative information booklets would be provided to them.  Dr Jain said that the patients operated in the last two editions of this project had started working again and were earning livelihood for their families. Preparations for this project have been going on for more than one year to make this a success.  Many young patients have been included who have lost their work due to disabling arthritis and are now dependent on their families. The department of Orthopaedics at DMCH is the leading centre for joint replacement in the region with more than five hundred hip and knee replacements carried out each year. The department has been equipped with the latest facilities and gadgets to make it at par with the international standards. Faculty from Orthopaedics department Dr. Rajnish Garg, Dr. Harpal S.
