Beas river damages paddy cultivation adjoining Majha and Doaba villages

Kapurthala/Jalandhar, August 13, 2013: As usual the Beas river is in spate and started damaging areas under paddy cultivation adjoining Majha and Doaba villages too these days.
The continued spate with pressure of Beas river water has inundated areas nearing the river these days. Areas in district Kapurthala the so-called check dams are seen under water.
According to an official, the river discharging over 1.15 cusecs water, which now has started receding these days.

The crops in so many villages in the Mand area in Taran Taran district have been affected, the worst affected villages are Dhunda, Maanakdek, Virowal, Kirishahi, Bholojala, Gargewal, Rampur Narottampur, Hansawala Bhail Dhaewala, Guiiarpura, Gharka, Karmuwala, Dhun Dhaewala, Chamba Kalan and Ghonewal, Ballarwal, Talwandi and Kotli.

According to Kanwelpreet Singh Pannu, Convener, Punjab Kisan Sangharsh Committee , the vegetable and fodder crops were damaged  completely. Few farmers stated that now their tubewells also submerged and the kacha houses washed away and their fields have been surrounded with floods.

The Taran Tarn Deputy Commissioner Balwander Singh after visiting the flood affected areas is of the view that the flood water recedes soon.

In Kapurthala district the water now has started receding right from Sunday afternoon said Daljit Singh Mangat, Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala. He has also claimed that there was no threat to check dams at any place in the district.
On the other hand the crop in so many villages submerged under floods in Bholath and Sultanpur Lodhi areas are under water. The DC Kapurthala claimed that the situation will improve as the water discharge decreases from Pong dam, it may take a day or two only everything will be alright.
