Chandigarh, June 18, 2013: The Punjab Education Department has played a significant role in getting disability certificates issued to 12,458 students of various government schools throughout the State in collaboration with state Health department.
Disclosing this here today a spokesman of State Education Department said the the office of Director General School Education had initiated a campaign with special emphasis on identifying the students with special needs for further providing them quality and free of cost medical treatment besides ensuring the benefits of other social welfare schemes. He said that under this initiative special medical checkup camps were organised at school level where doctors after thorough examination identified the students with special needs besides those suffering from chronic illnesses. He added that 12458 students were got issued disability certificates by the health department.
Giving the district wise details of the students, the spokesman revealed that maximum number of such certificates was issued in district Mohali (1970). Similarly, the number of beneficiaries of other districts as follows; Patiala (1587), Ferozepur (968), Fazilka (996), Amritsar (412), Bathinda (122), Faridkot (209), Fatehgarh Sahib (235), Gurdaspur (351), Hoshiarpur (602), Jalandhar (139), Kapurthala (1120), Ludhiana (181), Moga (748), Mukatsar (98), Pathankot (177), Ropar (788), Sangrur (966) and Tarn Taran ( 789).
The spokesman further informed that 56 students suffering from Thalesemia received free treatment during last one year and there was no pendency of Thalesemia patients awaiting treatment in any of the government school.
