Ludhiana, June 17, 2013: Police have seized 19 quintals of poppy husk smuggled from Madhya Pradesh (MP).
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Paramjit Singh Gill, Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana said a naka was laid, on a tip-off, near Gill Chowk, here on Sunday following which a truck coming from Malerkotla side was stopped. On checking, the consignment was seized. The poppy husk was kept in fifty gunny bags.
The truck driver was identified as Jagtar Singh of Chet Singh Nagar at Ludhiana and his associate as Kuldip Singh of Janta Nagar, Ludhiana. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused at Police Station Shimlapuri.
The accused, in the police interrogation, revealed that they had brought the consignment at the rate of Rs. 15,000 per bag from MP and had to dispose it off at Rs. 35,000 per bag. Commissioner of Police told that the accused had the past criminal record. He said the accused had been indulging into the illegal trade of smuggling since long, adding the accused had been disposing off the smuggled narcotics in different villages.
Further, Commissioner of Police told that more recovery was expected.
